Lake District

We happen upon a beautiful part of England with a two night stop over at Windermere in the Lake District.

During our drive from Falkirk we stop in at Cockermouth, a quaint little town with a castle at the top of a hill. The property is now privately owned so we could only stare in from outside the gates.

We roll into Windermere on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon and it is busy. There are people everywhere making the most of the idyllic conditions. It seems like Manchester and Liverpool have emptied of people and they have all descended to the lakes.

We check in and then take a walk up New Road to the township to look around and find a place for dinner. It’s an uphill walk that sees us reaching the township both hungry and thirsty. After a wander through the main streets we find a little restaurant named Brambles and enjoy their charcuterie board and wine tasting paddles. The staff are friendly and very interested in Australia and in particular Tasmania so we keep each other entertained for a few hours.

The next morning is sunny and warm making it perfect for a walk up to the highest viewpoint over Windermere Lake. It’s a bit of a hike, but well worth the effort.

From there it’s all down hill, literally. We wander down through the township and on to Bowness-On-Windermere which is situated right on the lake. It’s a Sunday so the markets are in full swing and there is a crowd building. We opt to walk along the water’s edge toward the ferry and admire the beauty of the lake and wonder how much it would cost to own a house here. The answer is way more than we’d like to spend so that daydream stops quickly.

Sunday afternoon sees us take a drive further up the district to Keswick which is a township sitting on a lake named Derwentwater. The lake is beautiful and the late sunshine makes it glisten while the backdrop of mountains helps it look postcard perfect.

We find a small cafe for dinner and then head back to Windermere. It’s our last night in the area. We should have allocated more nights here as there is so much more to see.

We are off to the coastline of Wales tomorrow for a complete change of scenery.
