Coles Bay

Our last real stop in Tasmania sees us set up camp in Coles Bay which is on the Freycinet Peninsula. The township itself is not much of a draw card but the back drop and surrounding beaches are pure magic. There are plenty of walks to keep you busy including trails to lighthouses, lookouts and coves.

This location also provides a good launchpad to the east coast with the Bay of Fires, Bicheno and St Helens all within easy reach.

All these destinations have something different to offer, Bicheno has it’s Blowhole, St Helens has its seafood and further up the coast you start to see the rock formations of the Bay of Fires and have to marvel at the colours, even under grey skies.

There is also the opportunity to visit the stunning towns of Ross, Campbeltown and Oatlands which have held on stoically to their historical past. They are simply pretty, welcoming and relatively unspoiled.

We cover the area over a few days which includes a visit to one of the best winery spots we have seen. Devil’s Corner is a member of the Brown Brothers group and has an outlook over Moulting Lagoon that is stunning. A light lunch and a glass of wine was enjoyed so much that we went back a second time.

So we say goodbye to the Apple Isle which has captivated us for several weeks. We saw everything we wanted to this visit, including snow, so have ticked a number of boxes with this trip. We have left a few things as draw cards to bring us back to this beautiful place sometime in the future.

We now head back to mainland Australia to start the next leg of our trip. After some time back on the farm in South-Western Victoria we’ll head into South Australia for a few weeks before heading home to Brisbane.
