Great Ocean Road

We spend the Christmas and New Year weeks in Terang, Victoria celebrating with family. Its great to catch up as we only get to see them a couple of times a year and that’s a good thing as you tend to eat too much, drink too much and generally put on a lot of weight.

The added bonus is that the location is a handy spot to make day trips along the Great Ocean Road which is one of the best road trips in Australia. The scenery is picturesque with rugged cliffs trying hard to stave off the advance of Bass Strait.

The colours of the cliffs always attract me as you see the various layers cast against blue seas and blue-grey skies while in the background lie a smattering of coastal vegetation and farming land. In the photo below the background behind the cliffs has bales ready to be collected from a neighbouring farm.

We take our time exploring a lot of the small tracks that are typically unmarked and, with the holiday crowds, we avoid the typical spots such as the Twelve Apostles. There is enough of the coast line to photograph without having to try and push to the front of the crowds.

The only hassle is the fluctuating weather which has caught us out a few times. The weather moves in and out so quickly that one day it can be 20 degrees Celsius and the next 41 degrees. Actually all that can happen in  one day. We saw the temperature hit 42 degrees before lunch and then drop to 20 degrees before the sunset. It would take me a while to adjust.
