We head further south and set up in the Bega Showgrounds for a few days. Bega is much bigger than either of us thought giving us an opportunity to simply walk around and enjoy the best it has to offer.
Yes, there is more cheese to be tasted and that was done and enjoyed. It seems there are a number of different products that are sent overseas that are not so common in the local market. Things like Bega Smoked Cheese slices, Peppered Cheese slices and even cheese in a can. No not the pressurised type that you find in the U.S. of A. This one tastes more like a creamy cheese similar to the old cheese sticks we enjoyed as kids.
There are more things to enjoy around the Bega Valley than just its milk and cheese products. Heading to the coastline you come to the area of Tathra which has all the makings of a brilliant seaside town. Beautiful wharf and jetty, rugged cliffs and coast, little bays and coves and views that go forever. Plus a newly renovated pub that sits proudly on top of the headland and has a simply amazing backdrop of coastline or mountains, depending on the viewing angle. The memorial walk on the headland is a local highlight as is the little cove where whale and rescue boats were launched. The remnants of the launch slides for the boats are still evident in places.
We also take the opportunity to make a day trip up to the highlands visiting Cooma and Jindabyne during our drive. The scenery is breathtaking with those, “Stop the car, I need to take a photo” moments a common occurrence. I want to go back, no I need to go back, actually NO I HAVE TO GO BACK and spend more time in the area. We are already planning our return early next year when I hope to take some beautiful sunrise and sunset photos in the Autumn months when the colours will be changing.
We also realise we are again close to snow and ice but still too far away to touch it. If you look at the panorama photo you can see the ice on the mountain tops in the distance. It’s on my bucket list to play in the snow and one day I will. We have travelled to Europe and Canada but our timing has never afforded us the chance to enjoy the snowy experience. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll come across some in Tasmania or in the Highlands on our way back.
