A quick trip up the coast line from Bowen was the order of the day. Well not exactly quick as it’s a good 200 kilometres away but, as we haven’t been to Townsville for many years we decided to make a day trip of it. Both Stacey and I were amazed at how the city area had grown and the view from Castle Hill shows how sprawling it is becoming.
After a late start we arrive into Townsville and happen upon the V8 Supercar Race Track and Pit Lane while fighting with the GPS. It wasn’t the GPS’s fault, there were road closures due a parade for the Cowboys NRL Team who are off to Sydney for the Grand Final this weekend. The city is decked out in the team’s colours and the radio air waves filled with pride for the guys. What ever the outcome on Sunday is the team has a solid backing here which is very deserved.
We arrive in time for lunch at The Strand, Townsville’s waterfront that caters for all with a water fun park area, restaurants, cafes, bars and great parklands for relaxing picnics or simply sitting on the grass, enjoying the views and breezes. We are not dissapointed. Lunch at the Char Bar right on the waterfront provides a delicious meal and a great view of Magnetic Island. We while away a bit of time there crowd watching and listening to the local ladies gossiping about each other.

After lunch we take one of Townsville’s “Must Do” drives to the top of Castle Hill to take in the views of the city, bay and suburban areas. The lookout gives us a good view of Magnetic Island but also allow a bird’s eye view of the V8 Supercar Race Track and pit area. The best of both worlds for us.
