Roma

Chinchilla to Roma Map

From Chinchilla we head to Roma and make camp at the Roma Clay Shooters Club and Caravan Park where a target competition is due to start. Stacey and I have now been schooled on the finer points of clay target shooting with many of the shooters and their support teams ready to provide insights into the sport. Great to watch but some of these people are truly fanatical as they will drive huge distances to compete. One Gent told us he was at a competition in Darwin last week then Roma this week and went into detail as to how they alter the guns to shoot various size rounds and that it was a financial commitment to shoot competitively. His gun was a “Cheap One” at just $14,000 but there were some shooters here that were investing over $70,000 for a competitive gun. Needless to say it was entertaining.

There is other scheduled entertainment in Roma but we are too early to enjoy the fun of the Wiener Dog Races.

Another highlight of Roma is a group of truck drivers that couldn’t find a caravan setup that quite suited their needs so built their own out of a semi trailer. Apparently the whole thing including accommodation for 4, ensuite and full kitchen was less than $10,000 which makes our van look expensive… The scaffold steps and balcony are an added touch of genius!

During the couple of days we make a few trips into town and a morning drive out to Mitchell where the local community is supporting the Primary School’s Book Week by having the children walk from store to store and enjoy being read to by the shop keepers and staff.
